WHAT IS COUNSELLING?

Are you finding there is something that is causing you upset or distress, maybe there is something that feels like an obstacle or out of reach, or perhaps there is something that feels difficult to understand that you cannot ignore? These are questions that counselling may be able to help you with. Counselling can offer a space and the time for you to talk about issues that you are encountering and the difficult feelings or problems that you may find to be challenging for you.

IS COUNSELLING THE SAME AS THERAPY?

The two terms are often used interchangeably, and in the UK, they are not protected terms or titles. I trained in counselling, but I call myself a therapist. Confusingly, both concepts fall under the broader banner of 'talking therapy'.

In simplified terms, counselling = therapy, and counsellor = therapist!

Hopefully, these terms will now make a little more sense.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A COUNSELLING SESSION?
During a counselling session we would work collaboratively to explore any issues that are present for you.  through this process we can aim to understand you more clearly and facilitate positive changes in your life.

HOW DOES COUNSELLING HELP?

improving mental health and well-being, resolving personal and emotional issues, overcoming traumatic experiences, improving relationships, managing stress and anxiety, improving self-esteem, setting and achieving personal goals, and developing coping strategies. The key benefit of counselling is that it provides an empathetic, non-judgmental, and confidential space where individuals can express their thoughts and feelings, work through their challenges, and gain new perspectives and insights.

HOW DO I START COUNSELLING?
If you’re interested in having counselling, please email me or go to ‘Contact’ to schedule an initial phone call which last 20 minutes. This will be an opportunity to give you a better sense of how I work and who I am.
If you would like to proceed, during our first session we will talk about what you would like to get out of counselling. At the end of your first session, if you feel you would like to continue, we can schedule your sessions at the same time each week for as long as you wish.
